Sympathy

It was with great sadness last weekend that we learned of the death of Kathleen O’ Brien. Kathleen was one of the unsung heroes of our parish and GAA club. She was the vice treasurer of the GAA club and worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Our thought and prayers are with her husband Joe and daughters Emma, Louise and Fiona and her extended family.

 

Community Games

Our Community Games U11 (1^st August) hurlers had a great win over Kilcormac Killoughey on Monday evening last . Leading by 3:04 to 3:01 at half time they managed to hold on to the lead and win by the narrowest of margins with a full time score of 3:10 to 5:03. Cummann Na mBunscol Hurling & Camogie

Well done to the boys from Rath National School who won  the Cummann Na mBunscol hurling final beating Seir Kieran National School by 7:10 to 0:15. (See separate match report)

Also well done to girls who played Killoughey Schools in the final, but unfortunately it wasn’t their day.

 

Lotto:

Numbers drawn for Monday 28th May were 9, 19, 22 & 28. There was no jackpot winner and we had 7 match 3 winners. Numbers drawn Saturday 5^th May were 4, 6, 11 & 18. Golf Classic

Division 2 League.

Shamrock 0-25, Drumcullen 0-15. After a good performance in the first half the sides were level at 11 points each, however a poor challenge cost us Conor Gath before half time. Shamrock dominated the 2nd half and deserved their win. Team: E Gath, B O’Meara, D Maher, J McCarthy, D Gath, J Murray, D Guinan, J Troy, C Gath, S Hanrahan, J Cashin, C Guinan, C Guilfoyle, H Ryan, P Cashin.

Division. 4 League.

Our Juniors had their first competitive fixture of the season against Carrig and Riverstown on Friday last. Result -Carrig & Riverstown 3-15 Drumcullen 1-12. Team: Stephen Ryan, Hugh Troy, John Brophy, Eoghan Barrett, Liam Kelly, Willie Spain, Mike Connolly, Cathal Dooley, David Spain, Eoin Gath, Joe Kelly, Conor O Meara, Mark Kennedy, Conor Guilfoyle, Andy McHugh. Subs: Dan Troy, Liam Guinan, Noel Mannion, Eoin Mannion. Paraic Watkins. Drumcullen gave a solid performance and led early, however some soft goals were conceded.

U13 Hurling League -Drumcullen v Kinnity on Friday 11th May at 7;30 in Kinnity.

U15 Hurling League -Drumcullen v Kilcormac Killoughey on Wednesday 9th May at 7;30 in Clareen.

Junior B Hurling –Drumcullen v Coolderry on Sunday 13^th May at 12;00 in Coolderry.

Hurling Championship.

Our second round of the championship against Brosna Gaels fell foul to a break-down in communication regarding the official time, with both teams given different times. This fixture will be re-fixed after the summer county hurling season is over.

U14 Feile Hurling

Congratulations to Drumcullen/Clareen U14 Feile team who had wins over Coolderry and Shinrone and were narrowly beaten by Birr, however they still qualify for the semi-finals which take place next Sunday 22^nd April in the Faithfull fields at 10:00am. All support greatly appreciated.

U17 Hurling League

Our next fixture is on Wednesday 18^th at 7pm v Shinrone in Rath.

Lotto:

Numbers drawn Saturday 14^th April were 3, 11, 19 & 29. There was no jackpot winner and one match three winner won €150: Nicole Murphy c/o Joe Mannion. Joseph Mannion won the promoters prize. This week’s jackpot is €6,050 and Team 4 are on rota.

Sympathy:

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of the late:  Joe Colgan Thomastown. Joe was a former player, coach and Chairman of the club.

Senior ‘B’ Hurling Championship

Drumcullen 0-16, Ballinamere 0-15

A rousing second half performance of grit and determination saw Drumcullen edge this first round fixture by the narrowest of margins to gain two valuable points. Played in dreadful underfoot conditions at Kilcormac following heavy rain, the first half performance suggested only one winner. Favourites, Ballinamere made all the running and after an even first quarter which saw the teams level at 0-6 each they eased away to lead 0-11 to 0-7 at the break and looked to be in control in most areas. Defiance, mainly in defence and especially Podge and Ciaran Guinan kept the margin to manageable proportions but such was Ballinamere’s dominance it was difficult to see a recovery.

On the restart, Drumcullen were inspired and holding their opponents scoreless for eighteen minutes established a three point advantage. Their tenacity and work-rate throughout the field was a joy and although there were some anxious moments in the closing stages, the win was richly deserved. Paddy Kirwan and his management team deserve great credit for some astute positional changes and it would have been interesting to hear the half-time dressing room address to the players!

Again, Conor Gath was unerring from frees from some difficult positions but he had great support from many quarters in that second half. The introduction of Thomas Leahy at the break brought a new energy which seemed to rub off on those around him. Working from a small panel, it will be a challenging year but Monday’s result is a great start. Team: E. Gath, B.O’Meara , D. Guinan, D. Maher(Capt.), C. Guinan, P. Guinan, D. Gath, J. Cashin, R. Membership

The 2018 membership is now due. Adult players -€50. Student/Unemployed player €20, Minor €10, Family membership €25 (includes 2 parents & 1 or child U18). Anyone who have not paid their membership can they so immediately.

Senior Hurlers

Our Senior Hurlers had a good first outing in the senior league at the weekend, beating Clodagh Gaels by 0-17 to 1-11.

Easter Camp

The club is organising an Easter Camp on 3rd and 4th April for boys and girls aged 6-10yrs. This is not confined to the parish and all are welcome.

Training

Our U9’s are back training in the field this Saturday at 11:00 am. U11’s also train on Saturday’s at 11:00am. U13’s training every Monday and Thursday in Rath at 6:30pm.

Offaly Hurlers

Hard luck to Offaly hurlers who produced an encouraging display against Kilkenny on Monday in the League quarter final.
